Waste Removal

Organizing your home and decluttering can leave you with a lot of “trash.” It’s important to dispose of items in a safe manner and we try our best to do it with the least impact on our planet. Here are some ideas and resources to dispose of all that clutter!

1. Determine which items can be reused. These may be sold or donated. See our pages on garage sales, item donations, etc. for ideas and donation centers.

2. Determine which items can be recycled. These would be the obvious like paper, newspaper, aluminmum cans and bottles, plastics and glass. It can also include items like plastic grocery bags, ink cartridges, cell phones and more. Check out our recycling page for more ideas and recycle centers.

3. Sort out the trash. What you have left is probably all trash, but not all trash is equal. Most of it can be put out in your trashcans for regular pick up, but some items are just too big. You need to arrange for a bulky item pickup with the city.

HAZARDOUS MATERIAL REMOVAL
(AKA HazMat.) Dispose of hazardous materials safely! Some items are considered hazardous materials and need to be disposed of in a safe manner. These include paint, household cleaners, batteries, e-waste, medications, lightbulbs and more. Here are some resources for this waste.

• Los Angeles Dept of Sanitation HazMat info, 1-800-98-TOXIC

• City of Santa Monica

• S.A.F.E. (Solvents/Automotive/Flammables/Electronics) Recycling and Disposal

FOUR WAYS TO REDUCE YOUR WASTE:
1. Buy only what you need.
2. Use all of what you buy.
3. Use less toxic alternatives.
4. Give unwanted supplies to someone who can use them.
